Automotive Glossary

Every car term explained in plain English — from ABS to VIN.

An automotive glossary is a reference guide that defines technical terms used in car maintenance, repair, and ownership. Understanding these terms helps car owners communicate effectively with mechanics, make informed repair decisions, and follow maintenance guides accurately.

ABS

Anti-lock Braking System — prevents wheels from locking during emergency braking, maintaining steering control. ABS uses sensors at each wheel to detect lock-up and rapidly pulses the brakes to maintain traction.

AFR

Air-Fuel Ratio — the ratio of air to fuel in the combustion mixture. The stoichiometric (ideal) ratio for gasoline engines is 14.7:1. Running rich (more fuel) or lean (less fuel) affects performance and emissions.

Alignment

Wheel alignment is the adjustment of a vehicle's suspension to ensure tires make proper contact with the road. Misalignment causes uneven tire wear, pulling to one side, and reduced fuel economy.

Alternator

An electrical generator driven by the engine's serpentine belt. It charges the battery and powers all electrical systems while the engine is running. A failing alternator causes dimming lights and eventually a dead battery.
