Regulatory agencies are developing the next evolution of on-board diagnostics. OBD-III, currently in the proposal and public comment phase, would add wireless communication capabilities to the existing OBD-II framework, enabling vehicles to automatically report emissions-related diagnostic data to regulatory agencies without requiring physical inspection station visits.
The proposed system would use cellular or dedicated short-range communication (DSRC) to transmit diagnostic trouble codes, emissions readiness monitor status, and key sensor data to a central database. Vehicles in compliance would receive automatic renewal of emissions certifications, while those with pending issues would receive notifications directing them to address the problem within a specified timeframe.
For vehicle owners, OBD-III could eliminate the inconvenience of periodic emissions inspections — no more waiting in line at inspection stations or scheduling appointments. However, privacy advocates have raised concerns about continuous vehicle monitoring, and the aftermarket industry has expressed concerns about the potential for manufacturers to restrict access to diagnostic data through proprietary wireless protocols.
The timeline for OBD-III implementation remains uncertain, with most industry analysts projecting a phased rollout beginning in the 2030 model year. In the meantime, the existing OBD-II standard continues to evolve, with expanded freeze frame data, improved mode 6 test results, and broader coverage of hybrid and electric vehicle systems.
